Celebrating Wakefield's Waterways through Local Art
Wakefield is shaped by its water. The Gatineau River, the quiet springs, the small creeks and wetlands that thread through the village—they are part of what makes Wakefield feel special and extraordinary. Also La Pêche is a region that is graced by many many artists, especially visual artists. Painting Waters is a public art project that honors that. We will be inviting local painters to create original works inspired by the water bodies they know best, and will be reproducing those paintings on plaques that will be installed near these water bodies throughout the village.
The idea is simple and heartfelt. When you stop by the river or pause at a favourite spot along the path, you will find a plaque that tells you something about the water in front of you—not just through words, but through the eyes of an artist who lives here. Each plaque will include the artist's name, a short biography, and a brief note on the ecological or historical significance of that particular waterway. A QR code will offer curious visitors a way to dive deeper, if they wish.
Over the coming months, we will be selecting nine artists to take part, working with them to digitise their work and produce durable plaques that can withstand the seasons. By late spring of next year, with the help of community volunteers from Sentiers Wakefield Trails, we hope to have the plaques installed and ready to be discovered. A public gathering will mark the occasion—a chance to walk the trail with the artists and hear their stories firsthand.
This project is about more than beautifying our public spaces, though it will certainly do that. It is about seeing our surroundings anew, through the eyes of neighbours who paint what they love. It is about reminding ourselves, and our visitors, that these waters are worth paying attention to, worth protecting, and worth celebrating. Célébrer les cours d'eau de Wakefield à travers l'art local
Wakefield est façonnée par l'eau. La rivière Gatineau, les sources paisibles, les petits ruisseaux et les milieux humides qui sillonnent le village contribuent à son caractère unique et exceptionnel. La Pêche est également une région qui a vu naître de nombreux artistes, notamment en arts visuels. « Peindre l'eau » est un projet d'art public qui rend hommage à cette richesse. Nous inviterons des peintres locaux à créer des œuvres originales inspirées des plans d'eau qu'ils connaissent le mieux, et nous reproduirons ces peintures sur des plaques qui seront installées à proximité de ces plans d'eau, un peu partout dans le village.
L'idée est simple et sincère. Lorsque vous vous arrêterez au bord de la rivière ou à votre endroit préféré le long du sentier, vous découvrirez une plaque qui vous en dira plus sur l'eau qui s'étend devant vous, non seulement par des mots, mais aussi par le regard d'un artiste local. Chaque plaque comprendra le nom de l'artiste, une courte biographie et une brève note sur l'importance écologique ou historique du cours d'eau en question. Un code QR permettra aux visiteurs curieux d'en apprendre davantage, s'ils le souhaitent.
Au cours des prochains mois, nous sélectionnerons neuf artistes participants et travaillerons avec eux à la numérisation de leurs œuvres et à la production de plaques durables, capables de résister aux intempéries. D'ici la fin du printemps prochain, grâce à l'aide de bénévoles de Sentiers Wakefield Trails, nous espérons installer les plaques et les rendre accessibles au public. Une rencontre publique marquera l'événement : une occasion de parcourir le sentier en compagnie des artistes et d'écouter leurs histoires.
Ce projet ne se limite pas à l'embellissement de nos espaces publics, même s'il y contribuera assurément. Il s'agit de jeter un regard neuf sur notre environnement, à travers les yeux d'artistes qui peignent ce qu'ils aiment. Il s'agit de nous rappeler, ainsi qu'à nos visiteurs, que ces eaux méritent notre attention, notre protection et notre célébration.
